Young minds, big impact: our SDG innovation showcase
Vodacom proudly hosted the UN Global Compact SDG Innovation Accelerator finals, casting a spotlight on young professionals’ innovative solutions aimed at achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Vodacom’s purpose is to connect for a better future, and in doing so we aim to positively contribute to the United Nations’ SDGs.
In line with this mission, we proudly participated in the UN Global Compact SDG Innovation Accelerator for Young Professionals for the third consecutive year. This programme empowers young talent to develop solutions that support the SDGs.
The 17 SDGs call on everyone to build a better world. Our ESG report shows how Vodacom supports the achievement of SDGs through strategic execution and responsible business practices. We promote digital and financial inclusion, enhance education, advance gender equality, and empower small and medium enterprises (SMMEs), while working to reduce our negative impacts, such as greenhouse gas emissions and waste.
Stephen Chege, our Chief Regulatory and External Affairs Officer, has highlighted the crucial role of both collective and individual efforts in achieving the SDGs. He praised the SDG Innovation Accelerator programme for its success in enhancing digital and leadership skills and challenging businesses to drive impactful change.
“I valued the opportunity to network with fellow young innovators from diverse backgrounds.”

Culmination of a nine-month journey
On 8 August 2024, in the lead-up to International Youth Day on 12 August, Vodacom World was abuzz with innovation and purpose as we hosted the finals of the programme at Connect 200. The event marked the culmination of a nine-month journey during which talented young innovators from leading South African companies came together to tackle some of the world’s most pressing challenges.
The day began with inspirational insights into how innovation and disruptive technologies can address global issues. Speakers included Dr Achieng Ojwang, Executive Director of the Global Compact South Africa Network, Mabohlale Addae, Vodacom Group ME of Strategy, and Loreal Tsiu, our EHOD of Innovation.
“It was a transformative journey that enhanced my skills, broadened my perspective on global issues and empowered me to bring these learnings back to my company for greater impact.”
– Atiyyah Limalia, Principal Data Scientist: Vodacom South Africa and Vodacom Financial Services
Highlighting our impact
The “dragon’s den”-style event saw teams from various South African companies – including Vodacom, Alexforbes, Discovery, Eskom, MTN, Nedbank, Old Mutual, Sasol and Sanlam – pitch their innovations, developed to contribute to the achievement of the SDGs. The two Vodacom teams presented their innovations to peers, with one team focusing on SMMEs and the other on e-waste. The SMME team secured third place in the final.
The event wasn’t just about recognising innovation; it was a testament to how Vodacom leverages partnerships to empower young talent to drive sustainable impact. Vodacom is committed to empowering young talent and growing these future leaders, continuing to foster creativity, drive innovation and make a tangible difference in the world.
