To foster a more joyful and engaged workplace, Vodafone Egypt’s Internal Communications (IC) team introduced the “Happiness Team”, a group dedicated to spreading smiles through unexpected gestures of goodwill.

It all started with a simple question in a weekly meeting: “How can we make our employees happier and more engaged at work?”

The IC team mulled over this question for weeks, tossing around ideas for new campaigns and initiatives. They knew that employee engagement and satisfaction were crucial for the company’s success, but the usual tactics of corporate events and initiatives just didn’t seem to be cutting it anymore.

As they reflected on their past efforts, the IC team began to question the very concept of traditional campaigns. What if, instead of orchestrated events, they could foster spontaneous moments of joy, with no other agenda but to bring a smile to their colleagues’ faces?

To do this, they came up with the idea of a “Happiness Team” – a group of colleagues that would roam the office, surprising employees with small acts of kindness.

Recognising the evolving expectations of a younger workforce, the team shifted their focus. They realised that small, frequent gestures might be more effective than infrequent, large-scale campaigns. Inspired by the belief that “small things do matter”, they brought their concept to life.

Making people feel cared for

Despite the team’s enthusiasm, they faced scepticism. Could these small acts truly make a difference, or would they merely be seen as gimmicks? And how could such intangible efforts be measured?

But the IC Team members were persistent. This wasn’t about metrics, they reasoned. It was about creating a culture where people feel genuinely cared for, where they know the company has their back, even in the smallest ways.

With careful planning, the Happiness Team began to take shape. The IC team handpicked a diverse group of employees from across the organisation, surprising them with small, personalised treats.

And that’s exactly what the Happiness Team also did. Week after week, they’ve been popping up in unexpected corners of the busy workplace wearing their trademark red shirts with the now familiar smile logo. Laughter and smiles became the new norm – and productivity and morale soared as a result.

The Happiness Team had arrived, and they were changing the culture of Vodafone Egypt one smile at a time.
