Welcome to our Yearbook ’23! It’s been a transformative year, shaped by the constantly evolving global business landscape, warp-speed technological developments such as the rise of generative AI, and a sharpened focus on sustainability.

Against this backdrop, our business focused on three thematic priorities: Customer, Simplicity and Growth. And we reached major milestones such as turning 20 years old in Mozambique and marking one year since we broke ground in Ethiopia.

It feels important to look back and celebrate these and other highlights from across our eight markets – the many ways we’ve brought our purpose, to connect for a better shared future, to life in 2023.

In this Yearbook, we find out more about the journey of our colleagues at Safaricom Ethiopia to reach their own ambitious target of 10 million subscribers by March 2024, despite launching just over a year ago. Another relative newcomer to the Group, Vodafone Egypt, has had a fantastic year, with highlights including a major revamp of its employee app and an initiative to turn front-line employees into experts.

Innovation is part of our DNA and another key driving force behind our growth. Jannie van Zyl and Ati Ngubevana explain how we nurture a culture of innovation.

Making a difference beyond our organisation, the Safaricom Engineering Community is equipping 1 400 young Kenyans with in-demand digital skill sets, helping students better position themselves for the job market.

Other highlights of 2023 include the Vodacom Tanzania team’s transformative journey to get REAL about customer obsession, while Vodacom Lesotho shares its quarterly Hall of Fame winners to celebrate their top achievements. In South Africa, the Spirit of Vodacom Day was a unifying celebration of our company culture, with staff gathering to reflect on our core behaviours and embrace diversity.

What set us apart in 2023 has been our performance – underpinned by a purpose-led ethos, the Spirit of Vodacom, and our talented people. This Yearbook is but a selection of our many wins as a collective.
