Something special happened at Safaricom Kenya recently, and it’s going to change how every employee experiences work, growth and belonging. The new Employee Value Proposition (EVP) reflects Safaricom’s genuine commitment to putting each person, their aspirations and their well-being at the heart of everything the company does.

More than words: a promise born from the voice of employees

“I Am Safaricom: A force for good, creating what’s next” didn’t emerge from a boardroom brainstorm. It came from Safaricom’s employees. Through engagement surveys reaching over 80% of employees across every function and demographic, focus groups, and HR clinics, their voices shaped this vision.

“Through employee engagement surveys, we engaged over 80% of our employees across functions and different demographics, held focus group discussions and HR Clinics, and what echoed consistently were enhanced reward and benefits, growth and development, taking actions and providing solutions, purpose and a desire for meaningful impact,” explains Peter Njioka, Head of Talent Acquisition, Capability, Talent Management & HR Shared Services.

“The EVP is a reflection of our collective voice, celebrating individuality while anchoring on a shared mission to be a force for good.”

Why now? Because Africa’s future needs it

As we accelerate towards Vodacom’s Vision 2030 to become Africa’s leading purpose-led technology company, it became clear that Safaricom’s employee promise needed to match the bold future we’re building together. The convergence of digital acceleration, generational shifts in workplace expectations, and demands for genuine diversity and inclusion created the perfect moment for transformation.

The breakthrough came when the team shifted perspective entirely. “We moved from defining who we are as a company to who our people are and who they can become,” Peter says. “That’s when ‘I Am Safaricom’ was born.”
