A tale of resilience: reopening our Century City office
Since 2001, our Century City building in Cape Town has been a home for many Vodacommers. In 2023, while a devastating fire forced us to close this iconic office, we’re grateful that no one was harmed. Challenges like these may test us, but they can never dampen the resilience, unity and unwavering Spirit of Vodacom.
Nearly two years after a destructive fire, our Century City building has reopened its doors. Discover how the thoughtfully revamped space showcases the Spirit of Vodacom and a renewed vision for connection and innovation.
Overcoming challenges with ingenuity
Rebuilding after the fire was no small feat. Being 24 years old, many of the original building’s designers were no longer in business, and documentation of the original design was minimal. Our Facilities team had to rely on old photographs to recreate certain areas, while others – like the smoke extraction skylight – needed entirely new designs. This skylight had to integrate with the existing steel roof structure.
To add to the complexity, reconstruction coincided with one of the harshest Cape Town winters in recent memory. Despite these challenges, the Spirit of Vodacom shone through as resilience and teamwork triumphed, bringing our office back to life.
“The reopening of Century City is more than just returning to a building – it’s a testament to resilience, partnership, and purpose. From the swift response of the City of Cape Town’s emergency services to the collaborative effort that rebuilt this space, we’ve seen the power of unity in action.”
During the reconstruction, staff were accommodated in temporary facilities just a kilometre away, as well as at other Vodacom offices in Bellville and Cape Town’s CBD.
Our rebuilt facility reflects our shared vision of digital inclusion, empowered communities and sustainable progress – from inclusive design and upgraded spaces for employee wellbeing to our pursuit of a 6-star Green Building Council rating. More than an office, our Century City building will serve as a hub for innovation, learning and engagement.
The reconstruction and enhancements include:
